The Auto Expo 2012, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, India

Recently, I was able to find time to visit the Auto Expo that took place in New Delhi, and have a first hand look at design trends and ideas for an Auto Show. It was an interesting visit, that threw up not only interesting ideas but also highlighted how the same or almost similar idea can be used and reused in different contexts.

The Delhi Auto Expo 2012, as expected, was very vibrant and inspiring, with some very interesting design ideas, and some not so interesting ideas. The crowds milling around in the halls that were displaying the automobiles bore testimony to the glitter and glam of an Auto Show. Comparatively the auto component stalls wore a pretty deserted look. It led me to think that it is not only the content or design of a booth that attracts crowds, it is the glam-quotient associated with it too. Or maybe it is only the glam-quotient that attracts the crowds. How that effects serious business in a corporate fair is anybodies' guess.

Getting back to the design part of the Auto Expo, the Ashok Leyland hall was very well laid out and display was interesting too. So was the TATA hall. The display of the Pixel at the TATA hall and the Jaguars displayed right next to it attracted a lot of attention. The way the hall had been laid out for easy movement and viewing was the highlight from a design point-of-view.

The Ashok Leyland hall was the perfect example of how with very minimal design elements, but a very effective layout the maximum possible effect can be achieved. Notice that the ceiling element is the only thing that can qualify as a design element, but that one element alone is so powerful that it enhances the overall experience without, in any way hindering with the display.

The Tata Pixel concept car!! An absolutely stunning beauty, a perfect example of the adage that good things come in small packages!! Although ironically the Tata Motors hall was a humongous display, but very effectively done.

Then there were the innovative display ideas and the innovative display ideas and the innovative display ideas ............ Please go through the next set of photographs to understand the repetition of words above!!
